It works!
I used this product to sharpen my knives from my ShopSmith stand alone 12" planer. It takes a lot of knife changing to do three knives but I got razor sharp knives as an end result. I found that it was easier to keep track of what knives and which grade of paper to use by writing it down and following what I wrote, rather than doing it by memory.
Take your time
If you take your time, it will put a nice edge on the blade. I have a Dewalt 733 (the older model with 1/8", non-disposable knives) and a Grizzly 6" jointer. The first test was on an old set of 6" jointer knives. I ended up sharpening a bit more off the ends than the middle, thus ruining them. I think with the 12" jig and the knives in the middle it is easy to sharpen unevenly. This was very much my fault, and I chalk it up to a learning experience. I need to be more careful and check my progress better.
My second test was on a really bad set of 12" planer knives. I got my planer used and the previous owner probably never changed them...they were very dull and with several nicks. This time I spent time making sure the knives were straight and even in the jig. I have a Groz straight edge which is within a few microns of completely flat and I found it pretty critical to have something to check the knives against as you go. I needed to take a lot off so I put the jig...
